We had a really lovely evening at Oldish in Cairo! The food was absolutely delicious and we loved every single dish. We’d particularly like to give a special mention to Ismael, our waiter: he was incredibly friendly, attentive and helpful, which made our visit even more enjoyable.
The restaurant itself is beautiful and cosy – we especially loved the idyllic courtyard. A great atmosphere, delicious food and warm service.
We’d love to come back and can wholeheartedly recommend Oldish!
Oldish was one of those places that pleasantly surprised us. Tucked away in downtown Cairo, it has a character that feels quite different from the busy streets outside. We came mainly for the food, but ended up enjoying the whole experience, particularly the warm and attentive service from the crew.
For our meal, we tried the beef tenderloin and hawawshi, among other dishes. The beef tenderloin was the standout for me. The meat was nicely prepared, tender and full of flavour, without being overwhelmed by heavy seasoning. It was the sort of dish where you can appreciate the quality of the beef rather than needing lots of sauce to make it interesting.
The hawawshi was another highlight and a good introduction to one of Egypt’s much-loved comfort foods. The bread had a pleasant crispness while the minced beef filling was savoury and satisfying. It is quite a hearty dish, so I would recommend sharing it if you are ordering several things. I particularly enjoyed having it alongside the other dishes rather than treating it as the entire meal.
What made our visit even better was the service. The crew were friendly, approachable and attentive without hovering over us. They were happy to explain the dishes and make recommendations, and there was a genuine warmth in the way they interacted with us. After several days of eating around Cairo, that kind of service really stood out.
I also liked that Oldish doesn’t feel overly formal. It has a relaxed personality that makes it suitable for a casual meal while still feeling like somewhere you can sit down and enjoy your food properly.
For us, Oldish was not simply another restaurant stop in Cairo. It was a place where good Egyptian-inspired food, comfortable surroundings and genuinely pleasant service came together. The beef tenderloin and hawawshi are definitely dishes I would happily order again.
A very enjoyable experience, and somewhere I would gladly return to when I’m back in Cairo.
