The Alexandria National Museum is a true architectural gem, housed in a stunning Italian-style villa that serves as a beautiful backdrop for Egypt’s rich history. The collection is impressive, spanning from the Pharaonic era through the Graeco-Roman, Coptic, and Islamic periods. It offers a much more intimate and manageable experience than the larger museums in Cairo.
However, it is heartbreaking to see such a significant site lacking proper upkeep. The building and several exhibits clearly need more attention and maintenance; issues with lighting, dust, and aging displays detract from the overall experience. Furthermore, the visitor experience would be greatly improved if the staff were better trained and more professional. At times, the service feels indifferent, and there is a missed opportunity for guided insights that could bring these artifacts to life.
With a bit of investment in facility care and staff development, this museum could easily be a world-class destination. It’s worth a visit for the history alone, but it definitely needs a “refresh.”
