Mohamed Marei
Heritage Alexandrian Patisserie with a Greek countenance.
Ordered:
Slice of Greek Halva
Americano
The dim light, the warm colours, the antique furnishing, and the mellow ambience allude to the nostalgia of Mediterranean decor dominance. In business since 1929, this Patisserie in the bustling heart of the city manages to capture the hearts of visitors, tourists, and locals alike, almost a full century later.
However, rich history and charm are not all that Delices has to show. Their diverse assortment of sweet delights, ranging from modern fusions to timeless classics, and their signature Greek specialties, does not begin to encompass their expansive offerings. From main courses to specialty coffee and drinks, they are sure to have something for all members of a visiting party, regardless of their preferences or convenience. Their vast, multifaceted range makes even diners and cafes pale in comparison.
As for the food itself, I have nothing but positives to recount. The hallva was tender, mildly sweet (as I like my desserts), and boasted a unique hint of spice tha played well with the sweet and nutty notes of caramel and almond laced on top.
The coffee was well prepared, had fruity notes of red berries, and was of a suitable temperature.
Their service model, however, is quite outdated and austere. You are forced to order each item separately from different vendors, who handle their individual silos from A to Z. This often leads to delays in the ordering process that could be overcome with a simple piece of software in our modern age. I understand the allure of antiquity, but some things should remain in the past.
Finally, I must say it is always a delight visiting Delices, and you would be remiss not to if you are ever in town!
