Unfortunately, I went to Estia Clinic to consult with Dr. Hassan Diab about minor gaps between my teeth and some concerns about my smile. I was asking him if it would be better to get composite fillings (cosmetic fillings) to fill the gaps or to get braces or aligners to close them. The doctor told me, “Why not veneers? That’s the best decision you could make in your life.” I replied that I didn’t know anything about them and had never considered them. I added that even though I’m a doctor (a general practitioner, not a dentist), I have no idea about dental procedures. I asked if it was a safe procedure. He replied that it was 100% safe and only involves filing down 0.3-0.5 mm of the tooth surface to create a rough texture for bonding, without any problems for the teeth. He said the filing is very minor and doesn’t affect the health of the teeth in any way, nor does it increase the likelihood of cavities or anything else. I asked him directly about cavities, and he said no, it doesn’t increase the likelihood. I asked him what the worst-case scenario was, and he said that the teeth could break.

Unfortunately, I agreed based on this information, which later turned out to be medically inaccurate. There are many potential complications that Dr. Hassan never told me about. I discovered that filing weakens the tooth, making it more susceptible to decay or root canal treatment in the future, and at 35, I’m terrified.

The doctor started the procedure that same day, and I left the clinic with a temporary restoration until the permanent one was placed. I didn’t know what my teeth would look like under the temporary one. I was shocked when the temporary one was removed to find that my teeth had been completely filed down. They were no longer usable as teeth on their own and now needed veneers, which were less than half their original size and looked awful. I wasn’t even told that I would be dependent on veneers for the rest of my life, and that it was more like a crown because the filing was done in 360 degrees around the entire tooth, not just surface roughening, as the doctor claimed! And this was all without my consent! I didn’t agree to have the shape and size of my teeth changed!

The permanent restoration I received from the lab had flaws and had to be changed twice before the final fitting. I had comments about the angles and gaps; the dentist said they would disappear after the crown was placed, but that didn’t happen.

There’s also a small gap between my two front teeth, which was my biggest dislike. And after all that, I found another gap, even if it was small, but it was still noticeable and didn’t look the way I wanted. So, my healthy teeth, which looked perfectly fine and had no major issues, were sacrificed to achieve “perfect,” and they’re not even there anymore! I didn’t understand the implications of the procedure, and I would never have agreed to it if it had been explained to me clearly and with the medical facts I read later!

And I also developed chronic tooth sensitivity that won’t go away, and I’ve never had tooth sensitivity before this procedure.

A month and a half after the procedure, I went to a dental consultant with a PhD and a faculty member at the Faculty of Dentistry, Cairo University—a completely specialized opinion. He said that this means there wasn’t proper gum isolation during the placement, resulting in microleakage of the gums with the cement. Unfortunately, this means there’s a good chance of developing chronic inflammation in the teeth under the veneers, requiring root canal treatment in the future. Upon reviewing the steps, it was clear that gum isolation tools weren’t actually used.

He was my original dentist (unfortunately, I only switched because his clinic was far away), and he has my photos before the veneers. He told me I didn’t need veneers medically; my teeth were healthy. This was the worst medical decision for me, and unfortunately, I’ll likely need to redo the procedure, and the risk will still remain.

Dr. Hassan said he was willing to do a redo for me himself because I didn’t like the way my teeth looked. But how could I trust a dentist who filed my teeth down like that without my consent? Because of this, I’m constantly terrified about the future of my teeth. I’m not exaggerating; I have nightmares all the time about what might happen to them after reading about and seeing other people’s experiences with similar problems.

I could have avoided all of this. My teeth were healthy and sound, and much simpler cosmetic procedures could have been done that would have given a very reasonable result without harming my teeth, which, no matter what I do, are gone forever.

These are my eight front teeth.

It’s been about a year since the procedure, and I still consider it the most difficult medical experience I’ve ever had. I wouldn’t wish it on anyone, and I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone unless their teeth were completely destroyed. For natural teeth, it’s a very difficult procedure and not worth the risk.

These are my teeth before and after!
