Alexandria Zoo

The conditions at Alexandria Zoo are deeply concerning. The lions are kept in small cages with no access to outdoor space, and they appear weak and lifeless. The bears, lions, and other large animals are forced to pace back and forth in their enclosures, clearly showing signs of distress and neglect. My husband and I heard there was an elephant and a giraffe here. When we asked a zookeeper where to find them, he simply told us they both recently died—undoubtedly due to the conditions of this detention center. Enclosures are inadequate for their size and natural needs, and there is no visible enrichment or proper care. This is not just disappointing for visitors—it’s cruel to the animals. I hope the authorities take urgent steps to improve the welfare of these creatures.

It’s the second largest zoo in Egypt after the one in Giza.

We had very good days at the Alexandria Zoo. We visited the zoo several times during our vacation. I really liked the contact system for communicating with animals. Each animal can be fed and touched. Of course, the city administration should pay attention to the fact that the zoo needs reconstruction and updating in a modern way. Landscape design to make places for animals more spacious and comfortable. Then the cost of entrance tickets will increase, additional services will appear, which will bring even more profit to the zoo and will allow the animals to be kept in good conditions, making the animal menu more diverse. And to provide better care for the animals, it was frustrating that many of the animals are very dirty and no one keeps them clean. I feel very sorry for the lions. They are under a lot of stress, in a small, dirty, stinky enclosure. They need more space for movement, greenery, air. I really hope that positive changes will come.
