We had a frustrating time. I’d advise against ever staying here.
When we arrived at 4am, we were told that unfortunately there was an “issue” with the room we booked and that we would be staying in their “new expansion building.” We were concerned, given we had paid extra for the deluxe double room with balcony and pyramid views, but assumed we would at least have a good room in this building “just down the street.”
We left for a morning excursion and returned around 12pm. We instantly noticed that there were guests in the upstairs rooms, one of which we had booked. It seemed to us that perhaps these rooms had been double-booked or overbooked.
We were taken to this “expansion building” which actually turned out to be a completely different hotel, the Beit Khufu. This was a twin room (two twin beds, no double) and nowhere near the room we had booked. When we looked online at the price to stay there, it was a third of the price of Sphinx House. Giving us twin beds, despite asking for a double, felt disrespectful given they were aware we were a married couple on our honeymoon/one year wedding anniversary.
To make matters worse, you’ll see the “view” from our window in the attached photo. No pyramids but not even looking outside – just looking into a dusty room, with minimal natural light.
Within two hours of checking in, we had checked out and moved into a different hotel. Luckily we were able to claim all our money back through our booking platform, although initially Sphinx House told the booking platform that we had been staying at the hotel for several hours, and demanded that we pay for the first night… despite having only just checked in.
Unfortunately, we realised afterwards that our experience was not unique. After a deeper dive into reviews from previous guests, we can see that other guests were similarly moved offsite into other buildings. It feels unfair, and it was a disappointing start to our first year wedding anniversary.
I’d also add that the actual Sphinx House did not match up to the photos we had seen online. The metal Sphinx House sign we had seen in all marketing content had been taken off the wall, and trees and grassy areas shown in photos online were non-existent. The pool was also out of action, and it was unclear if this would be resolved during our stay.
Avoid at all costs — accommodation does not match the photos at all
Our experience at this accommodation was extremely disappointing, to the point that we left about 10 minutes after arriving.
First of all, the address we were given was incorrect, which complicated our arrival. The location is also very inconvenient and difficult to access by car. The area where the accommodation is located did not reassure us at all upon arrival, which made the experience even more unpleasant.
Once there, it was also very difficult to contact the manager: he wasn’t answering the phone when we arrived.
When we finally gained access to the accommodation and saw the room we were assigned, we immediately noticed a huge discrepancy with the photos shown on the booking platforms.
The photos show rooms that appear modern, clean, well-maintained, and perfectly furnished. However, the room we were shown was completely different. It was more like a prefabricated building, with the following issues:
– Air conditioning that didn’t work properly;
– Extremely hot in the room;
– Numerous stains on the floor and sofa;
– Poorly maintained fixtures and fittings; exposed electrical wiring;
– A particularly poorly maintained, dirty, and badly finished bathroom;
– An overall impression of neglected accommodation, very different from what was shown in the photos.
I would therefore like to emphasize that the rooms shown in the photos on the booking platforms are in no way representative of the room we were offered.
Given this situation, we considered it impossible to stay there and had to leave after about ten minutes, then find alternative accommodation urgently.
We cancelled our reservation directly on-site and received a partial refund. However, approximately one-third of our booking amount remains unrefunded to this day, even though the accommodation provided clearly did not correspond to the conditions and presentation we expected when booking. The manager, Ali, is currently refusing to refund this amount.
I find this situation particularly disrespectful. Behind every booking are real people. Some travelers, especially students or those with limited means, save for months to finance their trip. Having to urgently book alternative accommodation upon arrival because the original is unusable represents a considerable cost and stress.
The problem isn’t simply that we didn’t like the room: there’s a major discrepancy between what’s presented on the booking platforms and what we were actually offered, compounded by the fact that part of the refund is still owed.
We absolutely do not recommend this accommodation and urge future travelers to be especially careful and to check precisely which room they will actually be assigned before booking.
